A Death Café is a trademarked structure that was inspired by the Suisse (Café Mortel) and created, developed and made popular by the late Jon Underwood, a nurse in England, UK in 2011. These gatherings have since been hosted all over the world. It is a format for people wanting a safe and judgement free space to speak freely about death, ask each other questions, share stories.
The principles of a Death Café are that “Death Cafés are always offered: with no intention of leading participants to any conclusion, product or course of action; as an open, respectful and confidential space where people can express their views safely; on a not for profit basis; alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!” (from the Death café international website). In this way, this is a space for folks currently curious about the topic but is not to be confused with a grief support group.
